Scenic Vistas Historic Heritage Outdoor Recreation Celebrating Cultures

Outdoor Recration > All Cities

The byway is a recreational mecca. Water sports including boating, fishing, canoeing and kayaking are prevalent. First-class marina facilities enhance the experience for boaters on the river. Water parks have become an attraction for those wishing to stay inland. A major bike trail parallels the byway and clusters of well-developed bike trails can be found in both Godfrey and Alton. A fine array of hiking trails can be found in and around the bluffs of Pere Marquette State Park, as well as numerous refuges and protected lands along the byway. To continue the outdoor fun, residents and visitors are privy to a world of birding and other watchable wildlife experiences. Known for the winter migration of the American Bald Eagle, bird watchers can discover more than 230 species of native and migrating birds. The area is a haven for both the novice and experienced adventure-seeker alike.
