TOURING THE BYWAY

BEGINNING YOUR JOURNEY
The 33-mile Meeting of the Great Rivers Byway begins in Hartford at the intersection of Illinois Route 3 and New Poag Road. The byway winds west and north via Illinois Routes 3, 143 and 100. Illinois Route 100 leads you through Alton and bends along the forested river bluffs approximately 25 miles to its ending point in Grafton at Pere Marquette State Park. Download the Byway brochure to use as your guide and get ready to experience the world just waiting to be discovered where the Great Rivers meet.

YOUR TRIP AND TIMING
Driving the entire Byway takes about an hour. In order to fully experience everything the region has to offer, you will want to set aside two to three days for your trip. Make sure you plan ahead for places you may want to stop along the way for food, lodging and entertainment. Most importantly, be prepared for some of the most beautiful scenery, diverse American history and natural wildlife that lie ahead.

AUDIO DRIVING TOUR
The Meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic Byway Audio Driving Tour is your guide to the unique communities and abundant history found along the byway. The audio tour takes you from the southern starting point of the byway in Hartford. The tour continues as you make your way through the byway communities and reach the ending point at Pere Marquette State Park. The tour contains the history of the many byway communities, as well as providing you information on historic sites and other points of interest along the way.

Listen to our byway webcasts (MP3 files for your enjoyment) here on your computer, download them to your portable MP3 player and bring them along on your trip to listen in your car as you explore the byway. The self-guided audio tour also is available as a CD to play in your car. Call the Alton Visitor Center at 1-800-258-6645 to request a free copy. iPods and adaptors are also available for loan at the Alton Visitors Center, 200 Piasa Street, Alton, IL. The tour is free, but it does require a credit card number as a refundable deposit for the use an iPod from the Visitors Center. The tour is available for check out on a first come, first serve basis during Visitor Center hours, Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
